Icons made for bssm_battle. I actually saved the .PSDs for these so I can actually say things about them. All icons were made in Photoshop.

Preliminary
The challenge: Use the title of an animated Disney movie as the text in an icon.
The Icon:

Commentary: Things I like: The crop/composition. I'm completely fond of the half-face crop (is there an official name for it) with the empty space up top. And the background, which combines three different textures (the main background, the stripes in the upper right--which I had to mess with the coloring for, and the light texture in the middle) I'm pretty proud of. Things I don't like: The typography bothers me. I think if I were doing it again, I wouldn't have combined those fonts, nor would I have put the white bar behind the text. The coloring is a bit dark for my taste, but my monitor was crapping out at that point, so I'll let it slide.
Result: Rank 7/23

Round 1
The challenge: Provided Images: Mock Anime
The Icon

Commentary:After about ten-thousand false starts on this challenge, I came up with this, which is probably one of my favorites in the whole battle. The texture up top is actually the use of this texture by tragicicons twice using layer masks brushes and rotation to get the circle shapes. Then I duplicated it, and fiddled around with the placement, until it looked right. The other little thing I did, was use selective coloring on the Sailor Venus layer to make her uniform better match the texture. The text really doesn't really come from anywhere. I just thought it fit the mood.
Result: Pass.

Round 2
The challenge: Right to left pairings. Based on an image, create an icon that featured one of four pairings (Aino Minako x Mizuno Ami, Mizuno Ami x Hino Rei, Hino Rei x Kino Makoto, or Kino Makoto x Aino Minako). The pairing could be romantic or platonic, but it still had to be portrayed as a pairing.
The Icon:

Commentary: I had one idea early on, but it took a long time to get it right. I tried to blend the two images of Ami and Rei to be as seamless as possible. I'm not too fond of the background texture. Done over, I would probably either have it all one color, or really play around with different patterns. The glow beneath the hearts and the wings around the outside are really want made the icon come together. Without those, it would have been a disaster.
Result: Pass.

Round 3
The challenge: Use the text "Misery loves company" in an icon.
The Icon:

Commentary: I have to admit, I love the composition. The text is the focal point of the icon, and the image really just serves it. I like the way the light texture blurs out beryl's arms and separates her from the foreground, as well as the use of the floral texture in the background to make the images of Princess Serenity blend in more. There's a grunge texture in there that originally made the top look too grainy, so blur tool took care of that, and hopefully it's not so noticable.
Result: Pass.

Round 4
The challenge: Make an icon featuring Sailor Pluto (my sekrit identity for this battle) and Sailor Star Fighter (my opponent's identity). Also: Final challenge.
The Icon:

Commentary: Yeah... So... *twiddles thumbs* THIS CHALLENGE WAS HARD!!!
Whining aside, there's no images of Pluto and Star Fighter together. And there's not a terrible amount of manga footage of either to manipulate. Mostly it came down between the icon shown above and another one. Neither of them were really that good, and I chose the one I did, just because I could make it look less ugly in a shorter amount of time. Perhaps if I could have made the senshi stand out more from the background, I could have won. I do like the shadow effect under the text and the border though.
Result: Runner-up. But I did get a pretty banner for my hard-work. ^^

Anyone who wants a more step by step-y tutorial for any of these, please comment and I'll do my best.

Any of these icons are free for the taking.
